To turn a feather into something you can use you have to either split it or strip it. With a knife, you can split a feather down the middle and then grind the base down to the thickness you want. Otherwise, you can strip it by carefully grabbing the web of the feather near the tip and pulling it away from the quill. Some feathers give you two usable halves. Sometimes one is bigger than the other, but in all cases they should not be used on the same arrow because they incline in opposite directions.

The Japanese use a hot piece of iron like an old-fashioned soldering iron to burn away the fluffy material from inside the quill. You can scrape it away if you like. If you have ground down a split feather, you do not have to worry about that part.

If you want to make a fluflu, you can trim the feather at each end to leave a piece of bare quill. You then put glue on the base of you feather, pin or clamp one end to the shaft and wrap the feather around the shaft until you can pin the other end. When the glue is set, remove the pins or clamps, trim the bare ends of the feather and bind them with thread for extra safety.

If the feather is too stiff to wrap around the shaft of the arrow, you can soften it by steaming it. I have a Turkish abrish arrow and it looks like the feather was steamed and the web bent at right angles half way up. When it was wrapped around the shaft, the tips of the web all pointed back towards the nock. This might have to prevent damage to the feather when it was shot with the aid of a siper. I have not made one like that yet, so I do not know if it flies better or worse than a regular fluflu.
